HCL Domino and Microsoft Active Directory Integration

The Client
A national commercial office construction company with key web based Domino applications.

The Challenge
The client had custom developed a means to sync user changes in their on-premises Microsoft Active Directory to the HCL Domino Directory relying on custom code, an intermediary database, ODBC connections, and more. Over time this became difficult to maintain and manage, and complicated efforts to perform Domino updates and upgrades. The client was looking for a streamlined and supported method to sync, and if possible set up Single Sign-On (SSO), with their Active Directory Federated Services.

The Solution
Working with Mercury, the client was able to upgrade their Domino servers to the most current Domino version. Then HCL Domino Directory Sync was deployed to sync user changes (additions, deletions, etc.) to the Domino Directory. Next, Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) SSO was set up such that the user’s Active Directory password would enable the users to log in to their Domino web based applications.

The Results

  • The client was upgraded to the most current and supported Domino version and was able to retire their custom Active Directory sync process and technologies.

  • With Directory Sync deployed, Active Directory became the source of record for Domino user changes.

  • Domino Directory user records do not need to be separately managed and manually updated to match Active Directory.

  • IT administrators and users no longer had to manage a separate password to access the Domino applications.

  • Active Directory password management and policies could be leveraged for the Domino applications.
